Buddy Goes Fishing

A short story by Lucy

Once upon a time there was a boy named Buddy. Buddy wanted to go fishing with his grandfather.

“Can I go fishing, Pop?” asked Buddy.

“OK, you can go fishing but we need some stuff first.”

So Pop and Buddy went to a store and got worms and then got a hook. They went back to their house and went to a lake which was right next to the house. Pop got a lot of fish but not Buddy. He was still struggling with his hook. “Ugh!!! This is too hard. I give up.”

“Don’t give up right away,” said Pop. “Here, let me show you how to get the bait on the hook.”

Pop showed Buddy how to put the bait on and to wait for a fish.

“All the fish see are the worms in the water. They think it’s food so they swim to it. Then, right when the fish is putting its mouth on the worm, you reel it in on land. Since fish cannot swim on land, they die. After that, we can put the dead fish in the net and bring it home and cook it for dinner. MMM!” Pop smacked his lips.

Buddy felt a tug. He yelled: “I got it, Pop! I got it!”

“Good job, Buddy,” said Pop. “Now cast it in.” He showed Buddy how to do it and he got the fish. “Yay!” he said after catching a few more fish. “I love fishing!” Now fishing was his favorite activity!
